Have a Leaking Sewer Pipe In the Basement? Call North Jersey's Pros.

One of the most serious restoration jobs we perform is related to sewage. Leaking sewage water within your home or business is flooded with bacteria, viruses, and fungi that pose a serious risk to inhabitants. Most people think the smell is the worst part of a sewage leakage. The truth is far from it.

Risk Factors for Sewage Damage

Similar to generalized water damage, sewage water poses risk to a property’s structure and organic materials. Items such as the carpet padding, plywood, drywall, and furniture all run the risk of being severely or permanently damaged by sewage. Here are some of the most common reasons why we see North Jersey residents experiencing this dangerous occurrence:

  • Tree root compaction – often times trees can grow root structures that puncture a sewer line. Following structural damage, they may continue to grow within the lines or simply result in leakage. In any of these instances, sewage water can quickly become an issue.
  • Structural problems – sewage pipes can become cracked due to age, misaligned due to installation defects, or collapse from external soil pressure. Any of these issues can blow the sewage line open.
  • Flushing of non-decomposable items – solid objects such as trash, toys, or plastic be flushed down the toilet, there is the risk for blockage and backflow. This is the most common cause of sewage damage in North Jersey.
  • City-Wide sewage problems – Should North Jersey experience a widespread backflow, sewage migrates to the lowest openings available. If this happens to be your basement, you likely have a big issue on your hands. Downstairs toilets and drains need immediate attention to mitigate any possible sewage overflow.

While these may represent some of the most common causes of sewage damage, there are numerous other ways in which this tragedy may strike. As such, it is important to know who you can call in the event of an emergency.
